Really Simple Story Queue

Building a local Coding Dojo using Free Software

Speaker: Don Kelly

An introduction to the purpose and practice in an Ottawa-area coding dojo through the lens of a software project. This talk will trace the construction and maintenance of a tool called RSSQ - a programmer's companion for tracking user stories. This project is the 'sandbox' for the programmers who practice at the dojo: we use RSSQ as a common context to explore programming techniques. We will also explore the role of free software and it's relation to the learning process of the journeyman programmer.

About the Speaker

Don Kelly is an Ottawa-area programmer with a decade's worth of time in the software industry. His first exposure to Linux and free software was in the early 1990's while trying to run PennMUSH on an donated 486. For those who might wonder: his preferred editor is Emacs.

A forecast of open source and commercial futures for scientific software infrastructure

Speaker: John C. Nash

From Nash Forecast:

“This paper is an attempt to sketch where things are going with scientific software over the next decade.

A special interest is the balance of open source and proprietary ventures. Note that open source may be commercial – indeed one premise of my work is that there must be either business or enterprise models that provide the ongoing resources to make possible the work that is done.”

About the Speaker
