February Meeting: Kernel Modules

The first hour is devoted to “new to Linux” users; how to make the transistion and how to learn more.
The second hour is devoted to more advanced topics. Even if it's not something you currently use, it shows the capability of software produced by public collaboration.

The meeting will begin with our semi-regular Gnews session that briefly highlights “New to Linux” beginner topics and other Linux tips.
This meeting we'll talk about using the terminal and the command line, why you want to and some suggestions on how to get started. Also, which terminal program to use and how to customize it.
Kernel Modules

“Writing, compiling and loading your first kernel module”
If you want to get into Linux kernel programming and never knew where to start, this talk is for you. Rob Day will show you, with a hands-on demonstration, how to configure, build and reboot to a new Linux kernel, then how to write and load your first trivial “Hello, World” loadable kernel module. Attendees are invited to bring their own Linux laptops if they want to try to follow along for themselves.
About the Speaker
Robert P. J. Day is a long-time Linux and open source professional trainer, having taught for numerous companies including Red Hat, Sun Microsystems, Global Knowledge and Protech Training, as well as delivering his own custom courseware. These days, Rob concentrates primarily on training in the areas of Linux kernel programming, embedded Linux, device drivers and OpenEmbedded and the Yocto Project.
