Managing Photo Collections: Glitches and Frustrations

As per our new normal, we will utilize jitsi for our meeting.

This month John Nash will lead a discussion on managing photo / image collections.

Some of the issues involved:

- the purpose of image collection(s)
- captions and comments; other metadata by discussion
- organization of collections; indexing
- general tools
- specific and custom tools
- collaboration with others, esp. non-technical users

Despite the title, some measures toward sensible organization of photo collections
will be suggested.

Some of the software mentioned will be
- DigiKam
- Geeqie
- Gwenview
- gThumb
- Irfanview (yes, we know it's originally a Windoze program)
- Mapivi
- exiftool, exiv2, rdjpgcom, wrjpgcom
- several of the author's own scripts and programs such as jpgdir2htm, JNJpgCom, and others

Discussion welcome. Pre-meeting questions on the linux-ottawa mailing list (linux@linux-ottawa.org)
would be helpful.

Meeting Details:

The meeting URL and code words will be emailed around 18:30 so there is a potential for some social time prior to getting started.

Rules/Procedures/Common-Sense:

Similar to last time, your output video and audio will be disabled when you join. In order to make sure the experience is a reasonable one for all involved, the presenter will share their screen-window-whatever they are comfortable with and you will see it quite clearly. Rather than unmute, pressing your space bar is supposed to unmute your microphone while pressed, so you can try that to ask questions. There is also the chat window, but when it is active it obscures part of the screen. Feel free to post questions and as opportunity presents itself and the presenter notices, they will get answered. After the presentation is completed, feel free to unmute and have a normal voice/video Q&A.
