====== August Meeting: Overview of Intellectual Property Issues in Open-Source Software, ongoing projects update ======

**We have had projector issues for the past couple of months, so we hope to have an extra projector available, just in case the room unit has not been fixed.**
This month we will be having two presentations, intellectual property issues in open source and an update on some projects that have been discussed in the past..

**Pre-meeting:**

There will be a one hour pre-meeting item from 18:00 to 19:00 for people who are new to Linux, have general questions, or wish to help out with people who are just getting started.

**After Meeting Social:**

After the meeting, there will be a social event at one of the nearby pubs or restaurants. A short discussion and vote as to location will be taken then.

==== About the Speaker ====

I'm a lawyer working in Ottawa, and one of the main services I provide is legal advice regarding open-source software. I've been published frequently by LWN.net, and I've been on newsstands around the world in the magazine Linux Voice. I run Fedora on my work laptop and use lots of open-source software to get my work done.

===== Project Update =====

John Nash will be giving an update talk on one of his many active projects. In John's own words, "Over the years I have had to deal with very large numbers of disparate files for teaching, research, administration, and personal activities. I have used a variety of tools, and developed a few of my own, in particular **rmaiib** (ReMove files from tree A If they are In tree B). In using different tools, it soon becomes clear that one needs a range of different approaches depending on the situation. Moreover, it is becoming more and more important to be able to automate the cleanup process to reduce not just the storage burden, but the costs of wading through unwanted material and deciding what is to be kept and what is to be discarded."

The presentation will attempt to review some tools and their pros and cons.
